How to Cleanse your crystals

Read on to find out how to cleanse your crystals, which crystals are best for cleansing and our top 5 ways to cleanse your crystals.

Cleansing crystals is very important as they are powerful energy absorbers and amplifiers.

When we receive a crystal it has collected energies along the journey to get to you. As the crystal comes into contact with others it will absorb their energies and the surrounding environmental energies. The crystal can collect negative and low vibrational energies and hold onto them until cleansed.

It is best to cleanse a crystal that you have adopted so that you are starting with fresh, renewed energies of that crystal. The crystal is then able to perform to its best abilities and potential as a crystal inherently holds its benefits, properties and energies naturally.

Likewise as we use the crystals to support us in our daily life, the crystals will absorb any energies that are being putting out or are in our own surrounding environments. It’s good practice to cleanse your crystal when it feels heavier than it usually does or when you feel it may have lost its lustre and shine.

This will recharge your crystal to its natural state and higher vibration allowing the crystal to continue supporting you at its fullest potential.

There are also crystals that self cleanse, for example Clear Quartz and Selenite. These crystals are wonderful at dispersing high vibrational energies that cleanse low vibrational or negative energy from their surrounding area and they don’t need to necessarily be cleansed unless you enjoy the ritual of it and it helps you connect to the crystal.

Self cleansing crystals such as Clear Quartz and Selenite are also used to cleanse other crystals. Place the crystal you want cleansed on or near the Cleanser Crystal, you can also use Crystal charging plates and bowls; Selenite plates, towers and bowls are widely available for this purpose.

How do you cleanse a crystal?

My top 5 ways of cleansing a crystal are;

Earth – Grounding Techniques, Light – Sunlight & Moonlight, Air – Smudge sticks, Palo Santo and Incense Sticks, Water – Sea Salt, Moon and Holy water and Space & Sound – Larger Cleansing Crystals (Selenite) and Sound healing modalities like Singing Bowls

Earth – Grounding Techniques

Placing your crystal either in or on top of the earth is a wonderful way to cleanse your crystal, any negative energy transmutes into the ground, pulling the negative energy out of your crystal and allowing the crystal to regain its full energetic power.

You can also take some earth, soil, sand or salt and place inside in a bowl and leave for a few hours to cleanse.

Another way to cleanse your crystal with the Earth grounding technique is placing the crystal on or underneath the soil in your potted indoor plants, planting it in your garden or placing near a tree. 

Air – Smudge sticks, Palo Santo and Incense Sticks

Burn Smudge sticks, Palo Santo or Incense sticks over and around your crystal to cleanse any heavy and/or negative energies held inside the crystal. You can also use the air of your breath to cleanse a crystal by directing short, strong puffs of air towards the crystal.

Water – Sea Salt, River, Moon and Holy water

Submerging or dowsing crystals with water washes away negative energies and impurities.

Place your crystal in a bowl of water for a short period of time or alternatively place in a flowing stream or sea water.

As an alternative you can gently mist water in the air around the crystal or place the crystal near a glass of water, Moon water works really well. 

Light – Sunlight & Moonlight

You can cleanse your crystals by placing them in Sunlight or Moonlight. All crystals can be cleansed by Moonlight however you need to be careful with cleansing some crystals in Sunlight as they can loose their depth of colour and fade.

A safety note – be careful with crystals sitting in the sun as they can lead to a point of heating, similar to a magnifying glass in the sun.

Here are some crystals that can be cleansed in sunlight; Black Obsidian, Black Onyx, Black Tourmaline, Howlite, Jade, Labradorite, Lapis Lazuli, Sunstone

Here’s a quick list of crystals to keep out of Sunlight.

Amethyst, Aquamarine, Celestite, Citrine, Fluorite, Kunzite, Larimar, Opal, Pink Amethyst, Rose Quartz, Sapphire, Smoky Quartz, Turquoise.

If in doubt choose to cleanse your crystal in Moonlight.

To cleanse crystals in Moonlight place them near a window and allow the Moonbeams to cleanse away any negative and low vibrational energies whilst also filling the crystal with some divine feminine energy.

A Full Moon has very powerful energies for cleansing crystals, and New Moons are wonderful for cleansing and setting intentions.

All Crystals can be cleansed by Moonlight.

Sound & Space, and Using other crystals to cleanse

Singing Bowls, certain frequencies, healing music, your voice spoken or sung.

Using Sound and Space to cleanse your crystals can feel a little more immersive than the other methods as you are generally a little bit more hands on in the process.

Using a singing bowl – place your crystal near the singing bowl as you use the mallet to create beautiful vibrations and healing sound frequencies.

If you want to get a bit more in depth different sizes of the bowls will generate different frequencies and will connect to different chakras.

However all bowls will help to cleanse your crystal.

Similarly you can sing, chant or speak to the crystal to cleanse away any negative and residual energies.

If you are unsure of the previous methods using meditative music and sound healing frequency music can be a nice simple way to cleanse your crystal. Search on Youtube for some wonderful tracks available.

Technically Sound and Space would be two separate methods however sound does travel through space so I really feel they are interconnected.

The next method of cleansing is using other crystals to transmute the negative energies that have collected in the crystal you’ve been working with. Use one of the cleansing crystals from the list below ;

Clear Quartz, Included Quartz, Black Tourmaline, Black Obsidian, Herkimer Diamond, Lemurian Quartz, Diamantina Quartz, Moonstone, Selenite, Shungite, Amethyst or White Calcite 

Place the crystal you want cleansed on or near the Cleanser Crystal, you can also place the crystals you’d like cleansed on Crystal charging plates and Selenite plates, placed near towers or placed inside crystal bowls.
